What the US Ambassador to Cyprus Julie Fisher Said

The USS Wasp has returned to Cyprus for a second time in 2024, docking in Limassol amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus Julie Fisher emphasized that the ship’s visit was part of long-planned partnership activities between the U.S. and Cyprus. Fisher reiterated that the Wasp’s presence in the region serves to support humanitarian operations, ensure regional stability, and prepare for possible civilian evacuations in case the situation in the Middle East escalates further.

This visit, like the ship’s first stop in August, involves the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which comprises over 2,000 personnel. Fisher also pointed out that the U.S., in collaboration with Cyprus and other key partners, remains committed to de-escalating regional tensions. The ship’s stay includes resupply and allowing its crew some rest, with the soldiers also expected to participate in a community service event hosted by a local charity for disabled individuals.

The reaction to the Wasp’s presence has been mixed. On one side, the Cypriot government views the U.S. military presence as aligned with Cyprus’ humanitarian role, which includes being prepared for potential

evacuations under the national ‘Estia’ plan, a mechanism designed to assist third-country nationals in emergencies. The Cypriot Ministry of Défense clarified that the increased foreign military activity is intended to support humanitarian needs, reinforcing Cyprus’ readiness in case the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict worsens.

The Reaction from the Political Parties

However, there has been political opposition. The left-wing party AKEL strongly criticized the government for allowing the ship to dock. The party argues that Cyprus is being drawn unnecessarily into international tensions, particularly amid the Israel-Palestine conflict, which some in Cyprus see as escalating further due to the U.S. military presence in the region. Protests also accompanied the Wasp’s return, with some demonstrators voicing concerns over the impact of U.S. actions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the potential risks Cyprus could face by aligning too closely with these military activities.

This reflects Cyprus’s broader challenge as it balances its strategic partnership with the U.S. while managing public sentiment and regional diplomatic complexities (Cyprus Mail).
