Cyprus Opens National Service to Women

Women Cyprus Military National Service

Women can now sign up for National Service in Cyprus

A New Era for Cyprus

National Service to Women: Cyprus now invites women to volunteer for National Service. This landmark change promotes equality and modernizes the country’s defense. The government announced the policy in late 2023. It opens a traditionally male-only domain to female citizens.

The Volunteer Model

The system operates on a voluntary basis. Women aged 18 to 26 can now apply. They will serve for 14 months, identical to the mandatory service for men. This voluntary pathway allows women to contribute directly to national security. The state will not conscript women; participation is a personal choice.

National Service to Women: Roles and Integration

Women will integrate fully into the National Guard. They can serve in various military specialties. These roles include combat support, cyber security, engineering, and military police. The armed forces will provide the same training for all volunteers. This ensures everyone meets the same professional standards.

Driving Forces for Change

The reform addresses a significant gender gap. It also tackles the issue of declining conscription numbers. Political parties and advocacy groups long championed this modernization. They argued that national defense requires the talents of the entire population. This move strengthens the military while reflecting societal progress.

Societal Impact

The decision has generated positive public discussion. It empowers women who wish to serve their country. This step aligns Cyprus with other progressive nations. It demonstrates a national commitment to equal opportunity and shared civic duty.
