A Mother Becomes a Symbol of Heroism<\/h1>

Loukia Papageorgiou (Laoutari) story from Avgorou stands as one of the most shocking, bloodstained, and sacred pages of Cypriot history. She was a farmer’s wife, mother of six children, and pregnant with her seventh. She became a symbol of the heroic Cypriot mother who did not hesitate to place her chest before the colonists’ bullets to defend the children of her homeland.<\/p>

A Secret Hideout in the Orchard<\/h1>

Loukia, together with her husband Georgios, served the Struggle quietly. They maintained a secret hideout within their orchard in Avgorou. They offered refuge and protection to wanted EOKA guerrillas.<\/p>

The Civilian Uprising Begins<\/h1>

In early July 1958, Commander Digenis ordered a general uprising of the civilian population. On Friday, July 4, the local EOKA covered Avgorou with national slogans. British soldiers tore them down. However, the next day, July 5, 1958, new slogans appeared everywhere. The village women, following a plan, stood ready for anything.<\/p>

Women Snatch a Boy from Soldiers<\/h1>

The British returned in fury. They grabbed a 15-year-old student, Kyriakos Makris, and forcefully pushed him onto a ladder to remove the slogans. The boy refused. At that moment, the village women charged like lionesses. They snatched the child from the hands of the heavily armed soldiers and spirited him away.<\/p>

From Bathing Her Child… to Immortality<\/h1>

The village bells began ringing wildly, sounding the signal for a general uprising. At that hour, Loukia was at home bathing her little daughter, Theodora. The moment she heard the bell, her heart tore. She left the child in her sister-in-law’s care and ran to join the other women on the front line of stones and stoning.<\/p>

The confrontation quickly turned into a real battle. The British soldiers, unable to handle the stubbornness and rage of the unarmed crowd, barricaded themselves inside their armoured vehicles and began mowing them down with their automatic weapons.<\/p>

The Blind Strike<\/h1>

The bullets found Loukia Papageorgiou. They cut the thread of her life and that of the unborn baby she carried in her womb. Together with her fell the fighter Panayiotis Zacharias, while another 18 fellow villagers sustained serious injuries.<\/p>

The Ultimate Greek Mother<\/h1>

Loukia did not fall holding a weapon in the mountains. She fell as the ultimate Greek mother. She left behind six orphaned children, a free homeland, and a name that will forever remind us that the freedom of this land was dyed with the purest, most maternal blood.<\/p>
