Greece secretly deployed this division to the island in 1964.

In response to intercommunal violence and the growing threat of a Turkish intervention, Greece moved beyond its legally permitted contingent of 950 men to build a significant deterrent force.

The Greek Division (1964–1967)

The Menelaos Division, known as the Greek Division, served as the primary conventional force that Greece sent to bolster the island’s defenses. Regular Greek Army units composed the division, which operated distinctly from the Greek Cypriot National Guard, though it worked in close coordination with it.

Strength and Composition: The division constituted a large, secret deployment. Although the Greek Prime Minister initially authorized 2,000 troops, the Minister of Defence secretly sent 3,000 more, bringing the total Greek force on the island to over 7,000 men.

Command Structure: Officers from Greece led the division. Its deployment fell under a larger command known as the Higher Military Command for the Defence of Cyprus (ASDAK).

Withdrawal: The division, along with General George Grivas, returned to Greece in 1967 following the Kofinou incident, which created political pressure from Turkey. Strategists later criticized this withdrawal because it left Cyprus in a significantly weakened military position ahead of the 1974 invasion.

The Permanent Garrison: ELDYK

We must distinguish the temporary Greek Division from the permanent Greek garrison, ELDYK (Hellenic Force in Cyprus).

Legal Basis: The 1960 Treaty of Alliance established ELDYK, granting Greece the right to station a 950-man contingent on the island as a guarantor power.

Role in 1974: ELDYK remained on the island after the larger division withdrew. During the Turkish invasion of July 1974, this force, numbering roughly 1,000 men, fought on the front lines. Colonel Nikolaos Nikolaidis commanded the unit. ELDYK units fought critical battles in the Kioneli village and around their main camp in Nicosia’s Gerolakkos area, suffering heavy casualties.

The Battle of Kioneli (July 20, 1974)

On the very first day of the invasion, ELDYK launched an attack towards the village of Kioneli. The men aimed to confront Turkish forces and break through to the bridgehead at Kyrenia. However, a lack of fire support forced them to call off the attack, and the Greek forces withdrew. Despite this, their actions slowed the Turkish advance.

The Battle of the ELDYK Base (July 21 – August 16, 1974)

The ELDYK camp near Nicosia became a primary target for Turkish forces throughout the invasion. The camp, positioned near the Nicosia International Airport, became a heavily contested stronghold.

Key Attacks: The base saw some of the most intense fighting. On August 14, Turkish tanks approached the camp and attacked in three successive waves. The next day, two more attacks followed before the base finally fell on August 16.

Artillery Support: The 187 Field Artillery Squadron of the National Guard supported the defenders, providing crucial fire to help repel Turkish attacks.

Significance: The defense of the ELDYK camp, alongside other units like the 212 Infantry Battalion, prevented the Turkish army from capturing the capital, Nicosia. The heroic resistance inflicted heavy casualties on the attackers.

The Battle of Ledra Palace (July 20 – August 16, 1974)

The Ledra Palace Hotel, located near the Green Line in Nicosia, became another vital strategic point. The National Guard’s Reserve Officers Company, along with other ELDYK-affiliated units, received orders to secure the hotel and the surrounding area before Turkish forces could arrive.

The battle raged fiercely. Soldiers from the 211th Infantry Battalion mounted a machine gun on the hotel’s roof and fired on descending Turkish paratroopers. The battle for this position continued until the August 16 ceasefire and ultimately ended inconclusively, with the hotel remaining in the UN buffer zone.

Sacrifice and Legacy

These battles exacted a high cost. Official figures list 88 mainland Greek soldiers killed and 83 listed as missing, in addition to the 309 Greek Cypriot military personnel who died. In 2025, the remains of 16 of these ELDYK soldiers returned to Greece after identification, highlighting the lasting impact of their sacrifice.

The Greek Cypriot President described ELDYK’s actions during the invasion as an “enduring symbol of bravery and sacrifice,” noting that these young men, most in their twenties, “fell in the line of duty and honoured their heritage and nation.”

Menelaos Division: The
